In this keyword research tutorial, Sam Oh goes through a step-by-step process to research keywords and map them to the buyer's journey.
You'll learn both basic and advanced keyword research tips to attract customers in every stage of their buying journey. Best of all, it's broken down as a step-by-step process.
First, you'll learn the four types of keyword categories, what they are, and how they fit into the sales conversion cycle.
Then we'll get straight into generating keyword ideas.
The keyword research tool used in the tutorial is Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer. You'll learn how to generate millions of keyword ideas and narrow them down into focused groups that target buyers based on search intent.
The next step is to analyze the top 10 Google search results for your target keyword. This will give you information on things like content format, search intent, and context of a topic.
Using the top 10 search results, you can also analyze how hard it will be to rank on Google for your target keyword. Sam goes over analyzing 3 metrics and finding a balance between referring domains, Domain Rating, and topical relevance.
Finally, you'll learn an effective way to find topics that are driving organic traffic to your competitors' websites.
Using this data, you can find low-competition topics as well as high traffic opportunities.

3:20 Determine search intent for a keyword
6:19 Analyze Google's Top 10 search results

Keyword Research Part 1 - SEO Unlocked - Free SEO Course with Neil Patel

Are you getting the right traffic?
As I mentioned, picking the right keywords will make you more money and picking the wrong ones will hurt you
You can use Ubersuggest, It's a tool I built, there's a free version of it that anyone can go and use and you can get tons of keywords ideas and it breaks it down not just based on popularity, but also what's most likely going to convert and generate you revenue as well. And there's tons of reports in it and I'll show you how to use it over the period of this course.
When you go to Ubersuggest on the left-hand navigation side, you'll see a link that says Keyword Ideas. When you type it in a keyword that you're trying to go after anything related to your space such as like shaving or razors, it'll tell you what's popular, the cost per click, the SEO difficulty, that's the word SD you see the abbreviation there or PD is paid difficulty.
When SEO difficulty is under 40 it's easier to rank for, when it's over 40 it gets harder and harder to rank for.
And on the right side of the keyword ideas report, it shows you all the people that are ranked for that keyword. How many visits are roughly getting from that keyword? How many backlinks they have?
And this will give you ideas of if a keyword is good, right?
In addition to that, if you don't want to use Ubersuggest there's many other ways you can go and find keywords out there.
Things like Wikipedia or other content pages around the web that have really detailed content can give you keyword ideas as well because these articles are filled with lucrative keywords.
You want to rank because you not only do you want traffic, but you need to be able to solve the customer's problem. If you solve their problem, you're much more likely to rank.
There's really five steps to keyword success.
The first is you need to build your keyword list, then need to research your target musketeer, then you need to understand the keyword metrics. Next you need to match the customer journey and of course, last but not least, you need to refine your keyword list.
So first building a keyword list, you go to neilpatel.com/training and you'll be able to download the PDF there and it breaks down how you can use it and what you need to do step by step.
Second, you need to research your target musketeer right? It's all about researching that individual.
The other thing that I like doing is Ubersuggest, right? It's a tool on neilpatel.com you can go to neil patel.com/ubersuggest or in the navigation just click on the Tools link and then Ubersuggest type in any keyword on the left-hand navigation once you go to the Keyword Ideas Report, you'll see a list of suggestions.
You don't want to just be reactive as a marketer or as an SEO, you want to be proactive and going after areas that people are going to be more interested in in the future.
You can also correlate intent through prepositions. And these are all long-term opportunities that you should be trying to rank for because these long-tail keywords, a lot of people aren't thinking about them and yes they don't drive the most amount of traffic today but six months from now, a year from now, it adds up and it can drive quite a bit in conversions.
Then of course there's Social Shares, so on Ubersuggest whenever you type in a keyword on the left hand navigation, there's a navigation button called Content Ideas.
So people are like, Hey Neil, it's easy for you but hey, when you're a new website and even if you get 10, 20, 50, 100 visitors, hey, it shows up in Google Search Console.
The other thing that you can do and this is what I love doing, is I like setting up a project on Ubersuggest and I put in my own website or you can put in your competitor's website.

#1 Best Free Keyword Research Tool!
Tired of overpriced keyword research tools? Looking for a 100% free way to get keyword search data and SEO difficulty scores? This video reveals the best kw tool.
I have published an updated keyword research video here: youtube.com/watch?v=p-LYWKIqkOk
Whether you are a blogger or SEO specialist, you need to have access to keyword search volumes and difficulty scores so you can make intelligent and data-driven decisions for your search engine optimization campaigns.
Since keywords everywhere is no longer free, this is the best keywords everywhere alternative.
This video is an update to my 2019 free keyword research video found here youtube.com/watch?v=2zjrM_Y2r3g
Personally, I still use a paid keyword tool as my preferred tool which you can see in action here youtube.com/watch?v=hOou986Tk1E
there is a corresponding step-by-step keyword research guide here:
If you want help finding keywords for YouTube, this tutorial is for you: milesbeckler.com/find-youtube-tags-keywords-with-tubebuddy/
once you have your keyword researchyou will need to learn how to write keyword focused content for SEO fast: youtube.com/watch?v=sDl16D71riQ
This video above teaches you how to go from the keyword idea and intent you get from the research process and then what to do with it...
specifically, how to build out an outline and a high ranking blog post based on the ideas Google gives you from your target keyword
And then you will need to learn how to layout your posts so they are optimized for search which I teach in this learn SEO video here: youtube.com/watch?v=A8EI6JaFbv4
in this video, you're going to learn how to do keyword research for free.
You're going to get to follow along and see exactly how to use the #1 best free keyword research tool available today, and ultimately you're going to get everything you need to be more effective with your content marketing and your search engine optimization strategy.
The simplest way to start is by just going into the search bar and typing in a keyword phrase based on something you're looking for. So I've got a few examples down here and we're gonna start with best kitchen knife.
Now this is, you know, if I'm doing a, an affiliate blog, if I'm a mom blogger who does a lot about cooking and recipes, this is where I'm going to go.
This is that next video that I'm talking about. I've got five separate keyword suggestion tools that blow the doors off of this. Um, it's probably good to just sign in and get it since you're using this tool, but be sure to subscribe so you get that next video. Now, the first thing you see right up top is a search volume. Though. The reason you want to pay attention to the search volume when you're doing content marketing is if you title your blog, posts your videos correctly, they're going to be in alignment with what people are searching. If you title them incorrectly, that means no one's gonna be able to find what you're doing because you simply chose the phrase that no one's actually searching. So that's the first metric we're paying attention to here is what is the actual search volume and then there's the S E O difficulty.
Now the SEO difficulty is an organic number. The pay difficulty is obviously paper click. This is obviously the cost per click and the SEO difficulty is the other factor that you want to keep in mind. So you're always playing a little bit of a mental balance game. You want high search volume, but you also want low keyword difficulty or low SEO difficulty as he calls it here. And then he gives you a little heads up that the average page ranks has 51 backlinks and a domain score of 79 now he doesn't exactly say how he calculates the difficulty and the domain score, which is one of my challenges and why the paid premium tool that I still personally use. They give me more insight so I can get a little bit more surgical with my data to know what I need to do to overtake the competition.
But this is great if you're on a budget, if you don't have 50 bucks a month to invest in a proper tool, this is a great place to go. Now we searched down in the bottom and you're going to see he has additional keywords suggested here, but they're all extremely similar and that's one of the flaws of this tool is how similar they are. Now you notice right here on keyword ideas, these tabs on the right will actually bring you more keyword suggestions. So I just went from suggestions to related and they're still very similar. Okay, we get best kitchen knife sharpener at this point, but then we can get into the questions and these questions are related to the best kitchen knife. So who makes the best kitchen knives? But if you notice the keyword volume, we're down pretty low at this point for still having a relatively high SEO difficulty score.
